Te mapa
Sylhet grew along the north bank of the Surma River, and the river still defines the city on a map as it sweeps in a broad curve past the centre. Streets crowd close to the water, then spread north over gently rolling ground. There, low hills known locally as tilas and patches of green interrupt the urban fabric.
The Keane Bridge, an iron span built in the 1930s, crosses the Surma near the historic core, and the Ali Amjad clock tower stands beside it. The city is also a centre of pilgrimage to the shrine of the Sufi saint Shah Jalal. The surrounding region is known for its tea estates, many of them laid out on the slopes around the city.
A Sylhet map poster brings together the curve of the river, the dense old quarters and the softer edges where hills and tea gardens begin. It resonates strongly with the large Sylheti diaspora, especially in Britain, and with anyone who has travelled to this green corner of north-eastern Bangladesh.
The river bends past the city centre in a wide arc, a bold white band. It divides Sylhet into its northern core and the districts that have grown along the south bank.
The iron bridge over the Surma is the city's best-known landmark. On the map it appears as a short, decisive line that links the two sides of the river.
On the outskirts, the street grid breaks up around small hills and tea estates. The edges of the map become irregular and open compared with the dense centre.
