Te mapa
Tailai is the seat of Tailai County in the south-west of Qiqihar, Heilongjiang, close to the borders with Inner Mongolia and Jilin. It lies on the Songnen Plain, one of the great farming regions of north-east China, where the land is almost perfectly flat. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by broad fields that seem to run to the horizon.
The flatness gives the map an unusual clarity. Roads run straight for long distances, dividing the land into large rectangles, and rows of shelterbelt trees line many of them. Toward the Nen River, the floodplain adds lakes, marsh and meandering channels, a softer pattern that contrasts with the ordered farmland and the regular streets of the town.
Winters here are long and cold, and the region is known for grain, especially maize, soybeans and rice. A Tailai map poster shows a town defined by space: a tight block of streets in the middle of an open landscape, with water and farmland around it. It is a simple, graphic image of China's north-eastern plains.
Regular blocks and straight streets form a dense rectangle at the centre, the most detailed area of the map and a clear focal point for the eye.
Long straight roads and tree lines divide the farmland into large rectangles, giving the edges of the poster a precise, repeating pattern.
Wetlands, lakes and winding channels toward the river break the geometry of the fields with soft, irregular shapes on one side of the map.
