Tanakpur is in Uttarakhand's Champawat district, at the point where the Himalayan foothills meet the plains. The Sharda river, called the Kali upstream, leaves the mountains here and spreads into a wide, braided channel. It also forms the border with Nepal, so the town's eastern edge is a river and an international boundary at the same time.
On the map, the town fills flat ground beside the river, with a railway terminus and roads heading north into the hills. Tanakpur is a gateway for pilgrims going to the Purnagiri temple in the hills nearby, and a barrage across the Sharda controls the water for canals that run south into the plains.
