Te mapa
Tartagal lies in the far north of Salta Province, Argentina, not far from the Bolivian border. It sits where the forested slopes of the sub-Andean ranges meet the lowland plains of the Chaco, and from above the town appears as a regular grid of streets pressed against the hills to the west, with the Tartagal River crossing the urban area.
The town grew as a hub for oil, timber and agriculture in the region, and it is home to several Indigenous communities, including the Wichí. In 2009, heavy rains sent a mudslide down the Tartagal River that damaged much of the town, an event that shaped later work on the riverbanks and flood defences.
A Tartagal map poster captures that dramatic setting: the straight, orderly blocks of the town, the river cutting through them, and the rising terrain to the west. National Route 34 runs past, linking the town with the rest of northern Argentina. It is a strong, distinctive composition for anyone connected to this frontier region.
The town's western edge meets forested ridges, so the street grid stops abruptly against rising terrain, giving the map a clear, dramatic boundary.
The river crosses the town from the hills, its channel breaking the regular grid and forming a natural feature through the urban area.
National Route 34 passes Tartagal on its way north toward Bolivia, a long straight line connecting the town with the rest of Salta and Argentina.
