Te mapa
Tauranga lies on a large, shallow harbour in the Bay of Plenty, sheltered from the Pacific by Matakana Island and the long sand spit of Mount Maunganui. On a map the city is broken into fingers of land separated by tidal inlets and estuaries, joined by causeways and bridges. The city centre sits on one peninsula, and the suburbs reach along the others toward Otūmoetai, Welcome Bay and Pāpāmoa.
Mauao, also called Mount Maunganui, rises at the harbour entrance. It is an extinct volcanic cone with a walking track around its base. Behind it, the suburb of the same name fills a thin strip between the ocean beach and the harbour. The Port of Tauranga, New Zealand's largest by cargo volume, runs along the harbour side, and the Harbour Bridge carries traffic across from the city centre.
Inland, the land rises toward the Kaimai Range, and kiwifruit and avocado orchards fill the countryside. The Battle of Gate Pā was fought in 1864 on what is now the southern side of the city. A Tauranga map poster brings these layers together: the peninsulas, the harbour channels, the long ocean beach and the steep cone at the entrance.
The volcanic cone at the harbour entrance is Tauranga's most recognisable landmark. On the map it is a tight, round cluster of contours at the tip of the long sandbar.
A shallow harbour of inlets, channels and tidal flats separates the city's peninsulas. It gives Tauranga its fragmented, watery outline, held together by bridges and causeways.
A long, straight beach runs south-east from Mount Maunganui toward Pāpāmoa, forming a clean edge between the suburbs and the open Pacific along the whole coast.

Koteā ko Tauranga
Tauranga is where many people have settled for the beach, the harbour and the climb up Mauao. A map of the city makes a good gift for a new home in the Bay of Plenty or for someone who misses those summer walks around the mountain.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example a suburb name and the year you arrived. Then choose one of five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand and Paper both suit the coastline especially well.
