Te mapa
Wellington is built around Te Whanganui-a-Tara, a large, almost enclosed harbour at the southern tip of the North Island. From above, the city centre occupies a thin strip of flat land between the water and steep hills. Much of that flat ground is reclaimed. Some was lifted by the 1855 earthquake, and later reclamation pushed the shoreline further out, which is why Lambton Quay, once on the waterfront, is now several blocks inland.
It is the world's southernmost capital of a sovereign state, and famously windy. The distinctive round Beehive building of Parliament sits at the northern end of the centre. The red cable car climbs from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Garden, while Mount Victoria rises to the east, with Oriental Bay curving below it.
A Wellington map poster shows a city that had to adapt to its terrain. Streets zigzag up the hillsides, suburbs spread into the valleys, and the Town Belt, a band of green reserve land, rings the centre. The harbour opens to the south toward Cook Strait, giving the composition a broad expanse of water.
The waterfront curves from the port through the centre to Oriental Bay, forming a clear line between city and water.
A continuous strip of green hills around the centre, set aside in the city's original plan and still visible on the map.
Roads winding up steep slopes in tight curves, very different from the grid of the flat reclaimed centre.

Wellington is often hung by people who studied, worked or lived there and miss the harbour and the hills. The shape of the city is recognisable even without labels.
