Te mapa
Dunedin sits at the head of Otago Harbour on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. Scottish settlers planned the city in the 1840s, and its name is the old Gaelic form of Edinburgh. On a map the centre follows a regular grid, but the grid meets the steep hills abruptly, so some streets climb at severe gradients.
At the heart of the plan is the Octagon, an eight-sided central plaza. A green Town Belt curves across the hills around the centre and separates the inner city from the suburbs above. Baldwin Street, in North East Valley, is widely known as one of the steepest residential streets in the world.
Beyond the city, the Otago Peninsula stretches along the harbour, with narrow roads following its shoreline. The University of Otago, founded in 1869 as New Zealand's first university, has its campus along the Water of Leith. A Dunedin map poster brings harbour, hills and planned grid together in one strongly shaped composition.
The eight-sided plaza sits at the centre of the grid, with the main streets radiating from it. It gives the map an immediately recognisable focal point.
A continuous strip of green parkland winds along the hills above the centre. It draws a soft curve between the dense inner city and the suburbs higher up.
The long, narrow harbour reaches far inland, with the peninsula on one side and the city at its head. It is the dominant shape on the map.
