Lake Wanaka lies in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. This large glacial lake stretches some 45 kilometres from the mountains in the north to the town of Wanaka in the south. On a map it is long and irregular, with a broad southern basin, several bays and islands, and a narrower arm reaching up toward the valleys of the Southern Alps.
The Clutha River, one of the largest rivers in New Zealand by volume, flows out of the lake at its southern end. To the east, Lake Hāwea runs parallel to Lake Wanaka, separated from it by a narrow strip of land known as The Neck. Mount Aspiring National Park lies beyond the lake's northern reaches.
Mou Waho, an island in the lake, holds a small lake of its own. Near the town, a lone willow growing in the water has become one of the most photographed trees in the country.
