Te mapa
Tembedgha is a town in Hodh Ech Chargui, Mauritania's easternmost region, in the Sahel belt between the Sahara and the savannas to the south. The land is flat to gently rolling, with sandy ground, scattered acacia and seasonal watercourses. From above, the town is a loose grid of walled compounds and wide streets spread across open land.
Many people in this region have traditionally combined herding with farming, following the rhythm of the short rainy season. Wells, water points and livestock routes are central to life here, and the town serves as a local centre for nearby communities. The regional capital, Néma, lies to the east, at the end of the long road across southern Mauritania.
A Tembedgha map poster reflects the openness of the Sahel. The streets are broad, the blocks generous, and the land around the town is almost empty apart from tracks. That spareness gives the composition a quiet, meditative feel and makes the town's small grid stand out clearly on the page.
Walled family compounds form wide rectangular blocks, which gives the town a loose, open grid that reads clearly even at small print sizes.
Unpaved routes fan out from the town across the plain, linking it to villages, camps and water points in the surrounding countryside.
Beyond the last houses, the land is almost completely open. This leaves broad blank space on the map that frames the town like an island.
