Te mapa
Tessaoua lies in the Maradi Region of southern Niger, in the Sahel belt between the Sahara and the savannas further south. On a map the town is compact and grounded: an older centre of closely packed compounds and narrow lanes, a few main roads cutting through, and newer districts spreading more loosely at the edges before the land opens into fields and scrub.
It is one of the historic Hausa towns of the region and sits on the main national road that runs east from Maradi toward Zinder, which makes it a stopping point for traffic crossing southern Niger. The surrounding area is agricultural, with millet and sorghum among the main crops grown during the rainy season.
A Tessaoua map poster captures the texture of a Sahelian town: the fine, dense pattern of the old quarters, the straight line of the highway and the wide, mostly empty space around the settlement. It is a quiet image, meaningful for anyone with roots in the town or ties to this part of Niger.
The centre is made up of closely set compounds and irregular lanes, a dense, finely grained pattern that forms the heart of the map.
The main road through southern Niger crosses the town, a long, straight line connecting it with Maradi to the west and Zinder to the east.
Around the town, the map becomes spare, with tracks and small settlements scattered across farmland and dry savanna that frame the built-up area.
