Te mapa
The Hammocks lies in western Miami-Dade County, in the suburban belt near Kendall where the metropolitan area meets the edge of the Everglades. The community takes its name from hardwood hammocks, the slightly raised islands of trees that once dotted this low, wet landscape. From above, that original terrain has given way to a carefully planned residential layout.
The map is dominated by water in a very different form from the Everglades: long, winding lakes excavated during development, with streets and cul-de-sacs curling around their shores. Main arterial roads form a coarse grid, while inside each large block the lanes loop and branch in the typical manner of late twentieth-century South Florida subdivisions.
Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport sits just to the south, its runways forming sharp straight lines against the softer residential pattern. This suburban geometry is what gives The Hammocks map poster its graphic quality, with the lakes as bold shapes and the looping streets as fine, rhythmic lines between them.
Chains of irregular lakes, dug during construction, snake between neighbourhoods and give the map its boldest shapes, with homes arranged to face the water.
Inside the arterial grid, residential streets curve into loops and cul-de-sacs, a pattern that turns the suburb into a fine, almost organic texture.
The runways of Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport form crisp straight lines just south of the neighbourhood, a sharp counterpoint to the curving suburban streets.
