Tilhar lies in Shahjahanpur district in the Rohilkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, on flat, fertile ground watered by the rivers that run down from the Himalayan foothills. The map shows a compact town with a closely built centre. Its lanes wind between old neighbourhoods and markets, while the fields press up close on every side.
A railway line passes the town, and roads lead off toward Shahjahanpur, Bareilly and the surrounding villages. These straighter lines contrast with the organic pattern of the old core.
