Te mapa
Tirumala sits high in the Seshachalam hills above the city of Tirupati in southern Andhra Pradesh. It is home to the Sri Venkateswara Temple, one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world. The town exists largely to serve that temple, and its map reflects this, with everything gathered on the plateau around the shrine.
The approach is part of the picture. Ghat roads climb from Tirupati in tight switchbacks, and a long stepped footpath rises through the hills for pilgrims who walk up. At the top, streets, pilgrim lodgings and service buildings spread across the uneven ground, with the temple complex and its surrounding streets at the centre.
A Tirumala map poster shows a place defined by elevation and devotion. The coils of the ghat roads contrast with the dense core, and forested, largely roadless hills fill much of the surrounding area. The result is an unusual composition in which the empty space is as important as the streets.
The Sri Venkateswara Temple and the streets circling it form the dense heart of the town, the point every road on the plateau leads towards.
The roads climbing from Tirupati twist back and forth across the slopes in tight hairpins. They make some of the most graphic lines on the poster.
The Seshachalam hills surround the town with steep, wooded terrain that has few roads. This leaves wide quiet areas around the built-up plateau.
