Te mapa
Toba sits on the northern shore of the Shima Peninsula in Mie Prefecture, and its map is dominated by water. The coastline is ragged and indented, with small bays, headlands and a scatter of islands just offshore. The town itself runs along the harbour front, with streets squeezed between the sea and the wooded hills that rise behind them.
Toba holds a special place in the history of pearls. It was here, at the end of the nineteenth century, that Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in culturing pearls, and the small island now known as Mikimoto Pearl Island sits close to the town centre. The waters around Toba are also known for the ama, women divers who have gathered shellfish from the sea for centuries.
A Toba map poster captures a coastline that is almost impossible to describe in words. Offshore, islands such as Toshijima and Kamishima, the setting of Yukio Mishima's novel The Sound of Waves, appear as clean shapes on open water. The result is intricate and still very calm.
The shoreline around Toba breaks into coves, points and sheltered inlets, producing one of the most detailed and rewarding coastal outlines a black-and-white poster can show.
Mikimoto Pearl Island, linked to the birth of cultured pearls, sits just off the waterfront and appears as a small, distinct shape beside the harbour.
Islands in Toba's bay, including Toshijima and Kamishima, scatter across the sea, each with its own small cluster of streets around a fishing harbour.

Koteā ko Toba
Toba appeals to anyone drawn to the sea, to pearls or to the quiet coast of Ise-Shima. The mix of island shapes, water and harbour streets makes a poster that feels both precise and meditative, especially in the Noir or Blueprint style.
Add a title, subtitle or trip date, keep or edit the coordinates line, and choose from five styles. Download the HD files for $9, or order a printed poster on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
