Te mapa
Tokoname lies on the western coast of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi, facing Ise Bay. It is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, and ceramics have been made here for many centuries. The old town climbs low hills behind the shore, where lanes twist between workshops, chimneys and former kilns in a tight, irregular pattern that looks almost hand-drawn on a map.
Down by the water, the plan becomes flat and regular. Reclaimed land and industrial plots line the coast, and a long bridge runs out to Chubu Centrair International Airport. The airport sits on an artificial island in the bay, and its runway appears on the map as a sharp rectangle surrounded by water, unlike anything else in the frame.
A Tokoname map poster brings together these two worlds: the winding pottery district and the engineered geometry of the airport. Visitors know the town for its pottery footpath, where walls and slopes are lined with old clay pipes and shochu bottles. The town is also a major producer of the familiar beckoning cat figurines.
Narrow, curving lanes wind over the hills of the old kiln district, forming the densest and most intricate part of the map.
The airport's man-made island lies just offshore, with a straight runway and a connecting bridge that stand out cleanly against Ise Bay.
Along the shore, flat reclaimed land carries wide roads and large plots, a clear geometric band between the hills and the sea.
