Te mapa
Tory Island lies off the northwest coast of County Donegal, across a stretch of often rough Atlantic water. It is small and elongated. On a map most of the human geography gathers into two villages, West Town and East Town, linked by a road along the island, while the eastern end rises into rugged cliffs and rock stacks.
Tory is part of the Donegal Gaeltacht, and Irish is spoken daily. The island keeps the tradition of choosing a king, an informal role as a community spokesperson who greets visitors at the pier. It is also known for a school of self-taught painters, encouraged in the 1960s by the English artist Derek Hill.
Folklore places the one-eyed giant Balor on the island, and the eastern crags carry his name. Among its antiquities is an unusual Tau cross near the pier in West Town. A Tory Island map poster captures a small, self-contained place, low and exposed, whose outline stands clear against open sea.
The island's two villages, joined by a road along its length. They form the only clusters of streets on the map, one at each part of the island.
The island's eastern end breaks into high rock, stacks and inlets, the most dramatic stretch of coastline on an otherwise low island.
The ferry from the Donegal mainland lands at West Town, where the island's harbour gives the coast its one sheltered notch.

Koteā ko Tory Island
Tory speaks to people with Donegal roots, Irish-language speakers and anyone who has made the crossing on a clear day. The print shows an island that has kept its own identity at the very edge of Europe.
