Toshloq lies in the Fergana region of eastern Uzbekistan, on the broad, flat floor of the Fergana Valley, not far from Fergana and Margilan. This is some of the most intensively cultivated land in Central Asia, and the map shows it: fields, orchards and settlements fit together closely, divided by roads and by the channels that carry water across the plain.
The town is laid out largely on a grid, with long straight streets and courtyard houses set behind walls. Irrigation canals run through and around it, some following the roads, others cutting across at an angle.
