Totteridge is on the northern edge of London, in the Borough of Barnet, and it has kept a strongly rural character. The area is organised around Totteridge Lane, a long road running east to west along a ridge, with commons, meadows and large private gardens on both sides.
On the map, this gives a pattern quite unlike the rest of London. Instead of a dense grid of streets there are a few long lanes, big irregular plots and wide areas of open land. The Dollis Brook winds along the valley to the south. St Andrew's churchyard is known for a very ancient yew tree.
