Te mapa
Treinta y Tres is the capital of the department of the same name in eastern Uruguay. Like many towns of the Río de la Plata region, it was laid out as a grid of square blocks around a central plaza. On a map, the regular cuadras form an orderly field of squares with the main square at its centre and the principal avenues running across it.
The town sits beside the Olimar river, whose wooded banks and meandering course run along the edge of the grid and bring a natural curve to an otherwise geometric plan. Beyond the urban area, the map opens into rolling grassland and cattle country, crossed by a few roads and many small streams. Rice farming is important in the lowlands of the wider region.
The town is named after the Treinta y Tres Orientales, the thirty-three men who launched the 1825 campaign that led to Uruguay's independence. Nearby, the Quebrada de los Cuervos protected area cuts a deep, wooded ravine into the hills. A Treinta y Tres map poster shows a classic Uruguayan grid town set on a river in wide, green country.
Evenly sized cuadras cover the town in a regular pattern, with the central plaza giving the composition a clear focal point.
The river curves along the edge of town. Its tree-lined banks make a soft, natural border to the rigid grid.
Rolling pasture surrounds the town, crossed by roads and small streams, giving the map a spacious, uncluttered frame.
