Trnava lies on the fertile plain of western Slovakia, northeast of Bratislava, and its old town is one of the clearest shapes on any Central European map. The historic centre forms a compact oval enclosed by long stretches of medieval walls, among the best preserved in the country, with ring roads and parks tracing the line of the former moat.
The town is called the Slovak Rome for the number of its churches, and their spires rise across the old centre. From the seventeenth century Trnava was an important seat of the Church in Hungary, and its university, founded in 1635, was among the most significant in the region. The town tower on the main square is its best-known landmark.
