Turnhout is the main town of the Kempen region in the province of Antwerp. From above, its historic centre sits inside a ring of roads that loosely follows the old town edge. At its heart stands the castle of the Dukes of Brabant, surrounded by water. Around it, a dense tangle of medieval streets gives way to more regular later neighbourhoods.
Turnhout is known as the capital of playing cards: printing firms made the city a world centre for card manufacturing from the nineteenth century, and a national museum is dedicated to the craft. Its beguinage, part of the Flemish beguinages World Heritage listing, forms a quiet enclosed quarter. North of the centre, the Dessel–Turnhout–Schoten canal cuts a straight line through the town.
