Te mapa
Uliastay is the capital of Zavkhan Province in western Mongolia, set in a narrow valley at the edge of the Khangai Mountains. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and blocks surrounded by bare hills and wide open steppe, with the river valleys providing the only natural corridors through the landscape.
The town was founded in the eighteenth century as a Qing dynasty garrison and administrative centre, one of the most important in the region at the time. Its location at the meeting of two rivers, the Chigestei and the Bogd, gave it water and shelter in a harsh, high-altitude environment.
An Uliastay map poster reflects that setting: a small, orderly town surrounded by vast emptiness, with river channels curving through the valley and a handful of roads leaving toward distant settlements. Printed in black and white, the composition has a remarkable stillness, emphasising the remoteness of this historic mountain town.
The Chigestei and Bogd rivers meet near the town, their channels curving through the valley and providing the natural structure around which Uliastay grew.
The centre is laid out in a compact, regular grid, a legacy of its origins as a planned administrative and military settlement in the Qing era.
Bare hills close in on both sides of the valley, leaving the town as a small, dense island of streets in a vast, open landscape.

Koteā ko Uliastay
Uliastay is remote even by Mongolian standards, and those who have lived or travelled there tend to remember it vividly. A map of the town is a way to hold on to that sense of distance and history.
You can add a personal title and subtitle, a travel date or keep the coordinates line. Choose among Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand; Sand in particular echoes the tones of the steppe.
