Te mapa
Ureña is in the state of Táchira in western Venezuela, directly on the border with Colombia. The Táchira River marks the frontier here, and the town's streets run right up to its bank. On the other side lies the metropolitan area of Cúcuta, so on the map the border appears as a thin line of water between two built-up areas.
The Francisco de Paula Santander International Bridge crosses the river between Ureña and the Colombian side, and much of the town's life has long been tied to movement and trade across the border. Main roads from the bridge lead into the centre and on towards San Antonio del Táchira and the Andean interior.
The town sits in a warm valley with hills rising behind it, and its streets form a mostly regular grid on the valley floor. A Ureña map poster shows the river, the bridge and the town's grid pressed against the frontier, a very particular geography rendered in simple lines.

The Francisco de Paula Santander bridge links Ureña to the Colombian side. Its short crossing is one of the most significant lines in the whole plan.
The streets are laid out in a largely regular grid on the flat valley floor, with the hills closing in around the edges of the town.

Koteā ko Ureña
Families in Ureña often have ties on both sides of the river, and many people have left in recent years. A map of the town at the border can hold a lot of memory, whether it hangs in Táchira, in Colombia or much further away.
