Te mapa
Utica lies in central New York on the south side of the Mohawk River, where the valley opens toward the Adirondacks. On a map, the lowland along the river is taken up by the Erie Canal corridor, rail lines and highways, while the city's grid climbs gently south up the valley side. Genesee Street, the main artery, runs from the river straight up through downtown and beyond.
The city grew on canal and railroad trade and later on textile mills, and its Union Station is still a working rail stop. In recent decades Utica has become known for welcoming large numbers of refugees, whose communities have reshaped many neighbourhoods. The F.X. Matt Brewery, maker of Saranac beer, has operated here since the nineteenth century.
A Utica map poster shows a classic upstate city layout: water and transport lines along the valley floor, a dense downtown near the station, and neighbourhood grids spreading uphill to the large parks on the south side.
The city's main street runs south from the river through downtown and up the slope, dividing the grid into east and west.
The Mohawk River, the Erie Canal and rail lines run parallel along the valley floor, a band of long lines at the north edge of the city.
On the higher ground to the south, large parks and a municipal golf course break up the grid with broad green areas.

Koteā ko Utica
Utica means something to many people: families who settled there generations ago, newer arrivals who made it home, students at its colleges. A clean map of the grid and the valley suits all of them.
