Te mapa
Albany sits on the west bank of the Hudson River, close to where the Mohawk River joins it from the west. From above, the downtown streets rise from the riverbank up the slope toward the State Capitol. A highway runs along the river and partly separates the city from the water. Beyond downtown, residential neighbourhoods extend west in a mostly regular grid.
The Empire State Plaza, a huge complex of government buildings around a long reflecting pool, occupies a large rectangle next to the Capitol. To the west, Washington Park forms a green space with a lake and winding paths. The Albany map poster shows how these two very different pieces of planning sit side by side in the centre of the city.
Albany is one of the oldest continuous European settlements in the United States. It grew from the Dutch trading post of Fort Orange, founded in the 1620s. It has been the capital of New York State since the late eighteenth century, and some of the oldest streets downtown still follow early colonial alignments.
This large government complex with its long reflecting pool forms a strong rectangular block. It is the most recognisable feature of the downtown map.
The park west of downtown has a lake and curving paths. Its organic shape stands out against the regular residential grid around it.
The river runs along the eastern side of the city, with a highway running beside it. Bridges cross to the opposite bank and frame the edge of the map.

Koteā ko Albany
Albany maps are chosen by state employees, alumni of the local universities and people with family roots in the capital region. The Capitol, the Plaza and the Hudson make the city recognisable at a glance.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a neighbourhood or a graduation year. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint shows the geometry of the Empire State Plaza especially well.
