Te mapa
Vandavāsi lies in the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, on the flat plains between the Eastern Ghats and the Coromandel coast. From above, it forms a dense town centre of narrow streets surrounded by farmland, with irrigation tanks appearing as open shapes in the landscape around it.
The town, known in British records as Wandiwash, gave its name to the Battle of Wandiwash in 1760, when British forces defeated the French during their struggle for influence in southern India. The battle was a turning point in the contest between the two powers on the subcontinent.
A Vandavāsi map poster shows the compact, organic core typical of Tamil market towns, with main roads leading out toward Chennai, Tiruvannamalai and the coast. The flat terrain lets the street pattern and the water tanks stand out clearly in a black and white print.
The centre is a dense web of narrow streets and lanes. It forms the most detailed part of the map and marks the town's historic heart.
Tanks, or reservoirs, are a feature of the surrounding plains. On the poster, they appear as smooth open shapes among the fields.
Main roads lead out in several directions toward larger towns and the coast. They give the composition a star-like structure around the centre.
