Veghel lies in the east of North Brabant and since 2017 has been the main town of the municipality of Meierijstad. Its map is organised by water. The Zuid-Willemsvaart canal runs straight through the town, while the river Aa takes a more meandering path close by. The centre, harbour areas and residential districts fall into place between these two lines.
The canal helped Veghel become a centre for industry and food processing, and business parks spread along the waterway and the A50 motorway. In September 1944 the town was liberated during Operation Market Garden, when airborne troops secured its bridges over the canal and the Aa. The episode is still remembered locally.
