Ventimiglia is the last Italian town on the Ligurian coast before France. Its map divides naturally in two along the Roia River: on the west bank, the medieval quarter of Ventimiglia Alta climbs a steep hill in a tangle of narrow alleys, while the east bank holds the flatter, more regular streets of the modern town, stretching along the seafront.
The town is known for its large Friday market, which draws shoppers across the border from the French Riviera, and for the Hanbury Botanical Gardens at nearby La Mortola, laid out on terraces descending to the sea. Further west, close to the frontier, the Balzi Rossi caves have yielded important prehistoric finds. Behind it all, the Maritime Alps rise quickly from the coast.
