Te mapa
Verdun lies on the Meuse in northeastern France, where the river divides into several channels as it passes through the town. On a map these arms of water split the centre into islands and quays, crossed by a series of short bridges. The upper town, with the cathedral and the citadel, rises on the west bank, while the lower town spreads along the river below.
The outline of the old fortifications is still visible in the street pattern, with ramparts, gates and bastions shaping the edges of the centre. The Porte Chaussée, a medieval gate beside the river, guards one of the main crossings. Beyond the walls, newer districts and rail lines extend the town, and wooded hills rise on both sides of the valley.
Verdun's name carries great weight. In 843 the Treaty of Verdun divided Charlemagne's empire, and in 1916 the town gave its name to one of the longest and costliest battles of the First World War, fought on the hills to the north and east. A Verdun map poster shows the town itself: river, walls, cathedral and the quiet streets at the centre of that memory.
The river splits into several arms through the centre, creating islands and quays that give Verdun its distinctive, fragmented outline on the map.
On the west bank, the cathedral and citadel occupy the high ground, with streets climbing toward them in a tighter, more irregular pattern than the lower town.
Traces of ramparts and bastions still define the edges of the old centre, their angular geometry clearly readable against the later districts beyond.

Koteā ko Verdun
Verdun draws visitors from around the world who come to understand 1916, and many carry family connections to the battlefields. A map of the town is a restrained way to mark such a visit, as well as a handsome portrait of a historic river town.
