Te mapa
Vernon occupies the northern end of British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, and its map is defined by water. Okanagan Lake stretches away to the southwest, Kalamalka Lake lies to the south, and the smaller Swan Lake sits just north of the centre. The town fills the valley floor between them, with residential streets climbing the surrounding benches and hillsides.
Downtown follows a compact grid near the valley bottom, crossed by Highway 97 as it runs north and south through the Okanagan. Beyond the centre, streets become curving subdivisions that follow the contours of the slopes, and the edges of the map dissolve into orchards, ranches and open grassland.
A Vernon map poster captures the unusual balance of the place: a regular downtown surrounded by the irregular shapes of lakes and hills. The Kalamalka shoreline, with its narrow arms and inlets, gives the composition a striking outline, while the ski slopes of Silver Star Mountain lie out beyond the northeast edge of town.
Long and narrow, Kalamalka Lake reaches toward the town from the south, its shoreline forming bays and points that frame the southern edge of the map.
The historic centre is laid out in a tidy grid on the valley floor, a compact block pattern that stands out against the winding streets on the hillsides.
The main Okanagan highway passes straight through town, a strong line linking Vernon to Kelowna in the south and to the northern Interior.

Koteā ko Vernon
Vernon has a way of staying with people, whether they grew up by the lakes, spent summers in the Okanagan or skied the winters at Silver Star. A map of the valley and its water makes a quiet reminder of that landscape.
