Te mapa
Villa María lies in the heart of Córdoba province in central Argentina, on the northern bank of the Ctalamochita River, also known as the Río Tercero. It was founded in the second half of the nineteenth century and grew as a railway and farming centre for the surrounding pampas, one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country.
From above, the city is almost entirely a grid of square blocks stretching across flat land, with diagonal avenues and railway lines cutting through the pattern. The river forms the southern edge. On the opposite bank lies Villa Nueva, a separate town so close that the two appear as a single urban area on the map.
Villa María is known across Argentina for its annual festival of peñas, a large folk music event held each summer. A Villa María map poster brings out the regular pampas grid, the curving line of the river and the bridges linking the two towns. It is a very Argentine picture of order meeting water.

The river curves along the southern edge of the city, softening the grid with its natural line. Riverside parks and green spaces follow its banks.
Villa Nueva sits across the river, joined to Villa María by bridges. Together the two towns form a mirrored composition, divided by the winding water between them.
