Villefontaine is in the Isère department, south-east of Lyon, and is one of the communes of the L'Isle-d'Abeau new town, a planned urban area developed from the 1970s. Its layout shows that clearly. Instead of an old square with radiating streets, it has curving distributor roads, looping residential lanes and neighbourhoods separated by woods and green spaces.
The terrain is hilly, and the planners worked with it. Roads bend around the slopes, and housing groups sit on the higher ground. A lake with parkland around it forms a large open shape near the town, a popular place for walks and swimming. Motorways and the Lyon–Grenoble railway pass nearby, linking the town to the metropolis.
