Te mapa
Wadayama sits in the valley of the Maruyama River in northern Hyōgo, now part of the city of Asago. On a map it is a narrow settlement, pressed between the river and steep forested slopes, with streets running along the valley floor and small side lanes climbing briefly before the hills take over. Rice paddies fill every flat stretch of land nearby.
The town is a railway junction where the Bantan Line from Himeji meets the San'in Main Line, and the tracks draw long curving lines through the valley. Nearby rise the ruins of Takeda Castle, whose stone walls on a mountaintop often appear to float above morning fog, a view that has made them known as a castle in the sky.
A Wadayama map poster shows how closely life here follows the terrain. The river, the rail lines and the roads run almost parallel through the valley, while the hills are left as open space, giving the print a strong, flowing direction. It suits anyone who has travelled the line or climbed to the castle ruins.
The river winds through the valley floor, and the town, roads and rails all bend to follow its course, giving the map a clear central axis.
Two JR lines meet at Wadayama Station, and their tracks form long, smooth curves that separate and rejoin as they pass through the narrow valley.
The mountain crowned by the Takeda Castle ruins rises nearby, and the winding approach roads trace its slopes at wider framings of the map.

Koteā ko Wadayama
Travellers who have seen Takeda Castle above the clouds often want a lasting reminder of the valley below it, and residents of Asago find in the map a clear picture of home. The river-and-rail layout makes a striking, calm composition.
