Te mapa
Walton-on-Thames lies on the south bank of the Thames in Surrey, just upstream of Hampton Court. On a map the river is the defining line. It curves along the northern edge of the town, with the green bank of Desborough Island and its cut, meadows along the towpath, and Walton Bridge crossing to Shepperton on the far side.
South of the river the town grows in a spread of residential roads, with a compact high street near the centre and the railway line to London running along the southern side. Large reservoirs lie just to the north and west, their straight embankments forming sharp geometric shapes that frame the softer bends of the Thames.
In the early twentieth century Walton was home to the film studios of Cecil Hepworth, one of the pioneers of British cinema. A Walton-on-Thames map poster carries that riverside setting well: water on two sides, a town of gardens and quiet roads, and the long straight line of the railway tying it to the city.
The river curves around the northern side of town with Desborough Island and its cut. It makes a strong flowing shape that anchors the whole composition.
Nearby reservoirs appear as large straight-edged bodies of water. Their engineered outlines contrast with the natural curves of the Thames and its meadows.
The crossing to Shepperton is a clear link over the river, joining the Surrey bank to the opposite shore and giving the map a focal point.
