Weißwasser Map Poster & Print
Weißwasser is a town in Upper Lusatia, in the north-east of Saxony, close to the Polish border. It grew quickly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a centre of glassmaking, and for a time it was one of the most important glass-producing towns in Europe. That industrial growth shaped a fairly regular street plan, with residential areas close to the old works.
The town is surrounded by pine forest, and the wider area has been deeply changed by lignite mining, with open-cast pits and reclaimed land nearby. Weißwasser is also known for ice hockey: its team, the Lausitzer Füchse, has a long history in German hockey. The landscaped Muskau Park, a UNESCO site, lies a short distance to the east.
