Wellingborough is a market town in Northamptonshire, in the English Midlands. On the map the town climbs north from the broad, flat valley of the River Nene. The older centre sits on the higher ground, with streets fanning out from it, and newer estates spread north and west over the years. The valley floor to the south stays mostly open, with water meadows and flooded gravel workings.
The River Ise comes down from the north along the eastern side of town and joins the Nene below it, so the town is framed by water on two sides. The Midland Main Line runs past the eastern edge, and the station and its tracks draw a long straight line against the looser, older pattern of the centre.
The name is usually linked to the springs and wells of the area, and wells still appear in the town's heraldry. A Wellingborough map poster shows how the town sits on its slope: a clustered core on the hill, the two river valleys and the rail line marking the edges.
