Wenling lies on the coast of Zhejiang in the Taizhou area, where low hills meet the East China Sea. The map shows an intricate coastline of bays, headlands and islands, with land reclaimed from tidal flats and a dense network of rivers and canals running across the plain behind it.
The city's fishing town of Shitang became famous as the spot where the first sunrise of the new millennium was seen on the Chinese mainland on 1 January 2000. Wenling is also a significant manufacturing centre, known for pumps, motors and footwear made by many private family firms.
