Te mapa
Wik’ro, often spelled Wukro, lies on the Tigray plateau north of Mekelle, on the main road toward Adigrat. The town stretches along the highway, with the densest streets near the road and a looser grid of houses and compounds spreading outward. Around it, the land is open and rocky, cut by dry river beds and farm terraces.
The area is known for its rock-hewn churches. One of them, Wukro Chirkos, stands close to the town and was carved out of the sandstone rock, and there are more in the surrounding hills and cliffs. These sites have made Wik’ro a starting point for people exploring the churches of eastern Tigray.
A Wik’ro map poster shows a plateau town in its setting: the highway as a strong spine, the town gathered around it, and the mostly empty land around the edges. It is a sparse, restful map, and the open ground is as much a part of it as the streets.
The main highway between Mekelle and Adigrat runs through the town, forming the backbone from which Wik’ro's streets spread out.
Churches carved out of rock stand close to the town and in the surrounding hills, and they are the region's best-known historical sites.
Open farmland, dry streambeds and rocky ground surround the town, leaving plenty of space around the streets in the printed composition.

For people from Tigray, and for those who have travelled through its highlands, Wik’ro is a place with meaning. A map of it is a calm way to remember a home town or a long road north, and it keeps the place present.
