Te mapa
Winnipeg is on the flat Canadian prairie, at the point where the Assiniboine River flows into the Red. The rest of the land is so level that the rivers are the only natural lines on the map. They wind through the city in tight meanders, and the street grid bends and breaks wherever it meets them, creating irregular districts along their banks.
The meeting of the rivers, known as The Forks, has been a gathering place for thousands of years and is now a public park and market. Nearby, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights stands by the water. The intersection of Portage and Main is famous for its wind and winter cold. Around the city, the Red River Floodway channels spring floods away from the centre.
A Winnipeg map poster shows the long, straight prairie roads and the rivers that interrupt them. Portage Avenue runs west in a single line, older neighbourhoods fill the curves along the riverbanks, and the floodway traces a long arc on the east side of the city.
The Red and Assiniboine rivers meet in the heart of the city. The site is now a park and public market, and it anchors the centre of the map.
Both rivers wind through Winnipeg in tight loops, breaking up the grid. Neighbourhoods and parks fill the curves along their tree-lined banks.
East of the city, a long artificial channel diverts floodwater around Winnipeg. It draws a wide arc across the flat land at the edge of the map.

Koteā ko Winnipeg
Winnipeggers tend to hold their city close, especially after moving away. A map with the rivers winding through the grid makes a clear, recognisable reminder of home.
