Te mapa
Thunder Bay lies on the northwest shore of Lake Superior, and the lake takes up much of any map of the city. The city was formed in 1970 when Fort William and Port Arthur merged, and it still has two downtowns. Port Arthur sits to the north near the marina, while Fort William lies to the south by the Kaministiquia River.
Between the two old centres, commercial strips and residential grids fill the land, with the Harbour Expressway and highway bypass curving inland. Along the shore, breakwalls and slips mark the harbour, and large grain elevators recall the city's role as a shipping point for prairie grain. The Kaministiquia's delta forms a network of channels at the south end.
Across the bay, the Sibley Peninsula forms the outline known as the Sleeping Giant, one of the most recognisable views on the Great Lakes. A Thunder Bay map poster places the city, the harbour and the peninsula together, with the open blue of the lake shown as calm, empty space.
Port Arthur and Fort William each keep their own compact street grid, forming two clear centres joined by the corridor between them.
At the south end, the river divides into several channels before reaching the lake, creating islands and branching water lines on the map.
The Sibley Peninsula reaches across the bay to the east, its long outline framing the harbour at the edge of the poster.
