Te mapa
Milwaukee is built where three rivers meet: the Milwaukee, the Menomonee and the Kinnickinnic, which converge just inland from Lake Michigan. The map shows the city's grid broken by these rivers and their industrial channels, crossed again and again by short bridges. East of downtown, the lakefront is a long band of parks and beaches, with bluffs rising to the north.
The city's early history is visible in the downtown streets. Milwaukee grew from rival settlements on either side of the river, and their grids did not line up, which is why several bridges downtown cross the river at an angle. The city is known for its brewing tradition, and on the lakefront the winged Milwaukee Art Museum pavilion by Santiago Calatrava sits beside the water.
A Milwaukee map poster brings those layers together: the long straight streets typical of the Midwest, the rivers and slips of the Menomonee Valley and the harbour, the Hoan Bridge arching over the harbour entrance, and the calm curve of the lakeshore. The lake fills one whole side of the frame, which gives the composition a strong, simple edge.
The Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers meet just before the harbour. Their channels divide the grid into distinct sections near the heart of the poster.
Downtown streets on either bank never quite matched, so several bridges cross the river at an angle. The small offsets are easy to spot on a detailed print.
A continuous band of parks and beaches lines the lake, with bluffs to the north. The shoreline gives the map a clean edge on its eastern side.
