Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes that lies entirely within the United States, and at this scale it reads almost like an inland sea. Its long axis runs north to south, and the shoreline is fairly smooth along the south and east before it breaks into bays and peninsulas at the northern end.
The southwestern shore carries the densest detail. Chicago's street grid presses right up to the water, with Milwaukee further north, and lakefront parks and harbours cut a clean edge along the city blocks. On the eastern side the Michigan shore is quieter, marked by dunes, small harbour towns and river mouths.
