Te mapa
South Bend takes its name from the river. The St. Joseph River comes down from Michigan, swings south here, and then turns back north toward Lake Michigan. On a map that curve is the city's strongest line. The downtown grid sits against the inside of the bend, and the older neighbourhoods fan out from it in straight Midwestern blocks.
North of downtown, the University of Notre Dame appears as a separate pattern. Instead of a street grid there are quads, tree-lined walks and two small lakes, St. Mary's and St. Joseph's. The South Bend map poster shows both patterns in one frame: the rigid civic grid and the looser, inward-facing layout of the campus.
The city was for decades the home of the Studebaker company, and large former industrial parcels still break up the grid on the south and west sides. Downtown, the East Race Waterway is a man-made whitewater channel alongside the river. It shows up on the map as a thin parallel line next to the river.
The St. Joseph River enters from the east, dips to its southernmost point here and turns north again. The rest of the city seems to organise itself around that curve.
Quads, paths and two lakes set the university apart from the surrounding grid. It is easy to recognise even on a small print.
A narrow artificial channel runs beside the river on the east bank downtown. It was built for kayaking and rafting and is clearly visible at poster scale.

Koteā ko South Bend
South Bend prints often end up with Notre Dame graduates, families of students and people who have lived through a few winters in the city. The river bend and the campus make the map easy to recognise without any labels.
You can personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line, for example with a graduation year. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the grid well, and Paper gives it a softer feel.
