Te mapa
Fort Wayne grew up where the St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers join to form the Maumee, which then flows east toward Lake Erie. From above, that confluence is the anchor of the whole city. Three winding channels meet just north of downtown, and the regular Midwestern street grid spreads out from them in every direction across flat land.
The downtown blocks are tight and orderly. Farther out, the grid gives way to curving suburban streets, parks along the riverbanks and long commercial roads. Interstate 69 runs along the western side, and I-469 swings around the east and south. Together they form a partial ring that frames the city on the map.
The city takes its name from a fort built in the 1790s and named after General Anthony Wayne. The frontier trader and orchardist John Chapman, known as Johnny Appleseed, is buried here. A Fort Wayne map poster centres on the rivers that local people call the Three Rivers, with the city's steady geometry arranged around them.
The St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers join to form the Maumee just north of downtown. The three channels make a clear Y shape that stands out immediately on the map.
Straight, evenly spaced streets fill the core south of the rivers. Their order contrasts with the looping courses of the waterways beside them.
I-69 and I-469 together trace a wide arc around the city's outer edge, setting a clear frame for the neighbourhoods inside.
