Te mapa
Joliet grew along the Des Plaines River southwest of Chicago, and the river still runs north to south through the centre of the city. Alongside it lies the Illinois and Michigan Canal, completed in 1848 to link the Great Lakes with the Mississippi river system. From above, downtown sits in the narrow valley between them, with the street grid climbing the bluffs on either side.
Known as the City of Steel and Stone, Joliet built much of its early fortune on mills and on local limestone, the same stone used for the Old Joliet Prison, the castle-like penitentiary seen at the opening of The Blues Brothers. Historic Route 66 passes through the city, and major interstates cross nearby, making it a hub for road and rail freight.
A Joliet map poster combines water, rail and road in one image. In black and white, the river and canal draw parallel lines through the centre, the downtown grid tightens around them, and newer neighbourhoods on the edges form soft curving patterns across former prairie. It is a map of an industrial river town that became part of the Chicago region.
The river cuts through downtown in a narrow valley, splitting the city into east and west sides joined by several bridges close to the centre.
The historic canal runs beside the river through the city, a thin parallel line that recalls Joliet's role on the nineteenth-century trade route between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi.
The former penitentiary, built of local limestone north of downtown, occupies a large walled rectangle beside the river corridor, one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
