Te mapa
Elgin sits on the Fox River about 60 kilometres northwest of downtown Chicago. The river runs north to south through the middle of the city, and the downtown grew up on both banks, connected by a series of bridges. From above, the river is the obvious centre line, with older streets fanning out on either side.
For much of its history Elgin was known for the Elgin National Watch Company, which for decades was one of the largest watchmakers in the world. The neighbourhoods near the old factory site and the historic districts close to downtown still have the dense, fine-grained blocks of a nineteenth-century industrial town.
An Elgin map poster brings out that layered pattern: the river and its islands, the older grid near the centre, and the looser curving streets of newer developments toward the west and the interstate to the north. It's a Midwest river city drawn with all its layers visible.
The Fox River divides the city from north to south, with bridges tying the two halves of downtown together. It is the natural spine of the whole map.
Near downtown, the older neighbourhoods keep tight blocks of Victorian-era streets. They contrast clearly with the wide, looping roads of the later suburbs.
Toward the west, newer subdivisions spread across former farmland in curving patterns. The shift from grid to loops shows how the city grew outward.

Koteā ko Elgin
Elgin is a city many people settle in to raise a family, and plenty of others grew up there and moved on. A map of its river and streets is a clear, grounded way to remember a first house, a school or a street corner.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to include a family name, a date or a neighbourhood. Then pick a style: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
