Te mapa
Aurora grew up on both banks of the Fox River, and its downtown sits partly on Stolp Island in the middle of the river. From above, the river is the backbone of the city, running north to south, with bridges crossing it at short intervals and grids on either side that do not quite line up.
Beyond the older core the city spreads out a long way, especially to the east, where newer subdivisions with curving streets reach toward Naperville. Interstate 88 runs along the northern side, and railway lines converge on the downtown area.
Aurora calls itself the City of Lights because it was one of the first cities in the United States to light its streets entirely with electricity, in 1881. It is the second-largest city in Illinois. An Aurora map poster shows the river, the island and the long reach of the grid onto the prairie.
Part of downtown is built on an island in the Fox River. The Paramount Theatre and several older blocks sit inside the river's two channels.
Frequent bridges connect the east and west sides, forming short crossings where two slightly mismatched street grids meet at the water.
Toward the east, the regular older blocks give way to curving residential streets and planned neighbourhoods that stretch out into former farmland.

Aurora is a place with a clear centre and a strong sense of its river. The map makes a good gift for someone who grew up there or recently bought a house in one of its neighbourhoods.
