Xanten lies on the Lower Rhine near the Dutch border, and its map carries two towns at once. The medieval centre is a compact knot of streets around St Victor's Cathedral, still partly enclosed by the line of its old walls. Just to the north lies the site of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, one of the largest Roman towns north of the Alps.
That Roman city is now an archaeological park, and its rectangular plan shows up clearly on the map as a large, orderly space beside the irregular medieval core. To the north and east, a pair of lakes created by gravel extraction add broad areas of water, and the Rhine itself flows a short distance away through open floodplain.
