Te mapa
Yanqi lies in the Bayingolin prefecture of Xinjiang, in a basin south of the Tianshan mountains. The town is the seat of Yanqi Hui Autonomous County, and it sits near the Kaidu river, which flows on into Bosten Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in China's interior. From above, the town is a compact grid within a wider patchwork of irrigated fields.
In ancient times this area was the centre of the kingdom known in Chinese sources as Yanqi and in other records as Karasahr, a stop on the northern branch of the Silk Road. Today the landscape is defined by irrigation, with straight channels and field boundaries spreading out across the basin floor before giving way to drier ground.
A Yanqi map poster shows an oasis in plan. The town's regular streets gather in the middle, the river and its channels cross the frame, and the ordered geometry of the fields extends toward the edges. It is a graphic picture of how water shapes settlement in a dry place, with centuries of history behind it.
The Kaidu flows past the town toward Bosten Lake, drawing a curving line through the flat basin and feeding the surrounding irrigation network.
Straight canals and rectangular plots spread around the town, forming a fine, regular pattern that fills much of the map beyond the streets.
Yanqi stands in the area of the ancient kingdom of Karasahr, once a staging point on the northern Silk Road route.
