Yarm sits almost entirely within a meander of the River Tees, on the south bank opposite Eaglescliffe, a few miles upstream from Stockton. The river wraps around the old town on three sides, and this loop is the defining shape of the map. It forms a rounded peninsula of streets with the water curving around it and a stone bridge leading north across the river.
The High Street runs down the middle of the loop and is unusually wide, a reminder of the markets and fairs that made Yarm an important trading town and river port. On the poster it appears as a broad, clear axis with its long rows of buildings, and narrow wynds lead off it toward the river.
The Yarm Viaduct strides across the town. It was built for the railway in 1849, has 43 arches and is one of the largest brick viaducts in England.
